Health Access in Secondary Schools
Adolescent Health Access Workshop
The Rural Youth Health Access Program has been designed by the Centre for Adolescent Health – Royal Children’s Hospital and adapted by the Goulburn Valley Division of General Practice to suit the needs of rural adolescents.
The Goulburn Valley Division of General Practice conducts this program in every High School in the region with the aim of improving the general health of young people and increase their access to health services.
It is well documented that the overall general health of Adolescents is declining. The reasons for this decline are:
- Young people may not know what services are available and how to access these services.
- They may not know when they are eligible to obtain their own Medicare card and how to obtain it. This is important if confidentiality is an issue for the young person.
- Young people may not understand that health care professionals will respect their wishes to confidentiality.
- Health Care services may not portray a “youth friendly” environment.
It is therefore extremely important that the problem of deteriorating health be addressed. Areas of concerns are suicide, motor vehicle accidents, depression, drug abuse, sexually transmitted diseases and eating disorders. For young people to respond positively to such threats in their environments requires the use of health services.
A basic cause of the declining health of young people is that they lack information. As most young people attend schools, it is the logical place to provide them with this information.
We hope that by working together – young people, parents, schools and health services – we can improve and protect the health of our children.

Mobiletype for young people
Are you 14 to 24 years old?
What is Mobiletype?
Mobiletype is a mobile phone monitoring tool that helps you keep track of your daily experiences. It is the first of its kind in the world.
Want to get involved?
It's free, just ask your doctor if this program is suitable for you. If it is, they will sign you up, and our research team will meet you to explain how to use it. We will lend you a mobile phone for 2 – 4 weeks so you can monitor your daily experiences.
What do you get out of it?
After the 2 to 4 weeks, your doctor will use our specially designed website to go through your answers. They will then help you manage any problems you're having.
You can use the phone however you like. We give you $30 worth of credit on a Telstra pre-paid sim-card, which you can keep and use in your own phone after the study.
