Influenza Pandemic Planning

E-mail Print PDF

It is important that we are prepared for the possibility of a pandemic and ready to respond to the threat to help slow the spread of infection and lessen the impact.

The Australian Health Management Plan for Pandemic Influenza 2008 (AHMPPI 2008) is a national health plan for responding to an influenza pandemic, based on international best practice and evidence.

The National Action Plan for Human Influenza Pandemic (NAP) describes how the Australian Government and state, territory and local governments will cooperate in prevention, preparedness, response and recovery from a human influenza pandemic

The Victorian Government has developed a plan and will lead the State’s response to a human pandemic. This plan includes an Information Kit and Workplan for General Practice  and aims to provide an effective health response framework to minimise the morbidity and mortality associated with an influenza pandemic and its impact on the Victorian community, health care system and the economy.

H1N1 Influenza 09 (Human Swine Influenza)

Since 17 June 2009 Australia’s response to pandemic (H1N1) 2009 has been guided by the PROTECT phase within the Australian Health Management Plan for Pandemic Influenza (AHMPPI).

PROTECT recognises that infection with pandemic (H1N1) 2009 is not as severe as originally envisaged when AHMPPI was written in 2008, and that although this new disease is mild in most cases, it can be severe in some. PROTECT puts greater focus on treating and caring for people in whom the disease may be severe.
