After Hours GP Medical Centre
The After Hours GP Medical Centre began at 20 Fitzgerald Street Shepparton, in the consulting suites of Shepparton Private Hospital commencing operations on 13 July 2002. It is now located within Primary Care Connect (formerly Goulburn Valley Community Health Service) at 399 Wyndham Street, Shepparton where it has been operating since 30 August 2007.
The Centre was established in 2002 with the help of a $50,000 infrastructure grant from the Department of Health and Ageing as part of the After Hours Primary Medical Care Development Grants Program.
At that time GPs in the region were committed to after hours as follows:
20% on call 7 days per week
3% on call 3 times per week
60% on call 1-2 times per week
17% on call less than twice per week
At commencement of the After Hours Clinc, there were 11 GPs involved in the roster with three being from outside the area directly serviced by the Centre. Today the clinic has 47 GPs from Shepparton, Mooroopna, Tatura, Murchison, Nagambie and Euroa. The adminstration team at the After Hours GP Medical Centre consists of the Practice Manager, one permanent part-time receptionist and six casual reception staff.
As at 30 June 2009, almost 33,000 consultations have been delivered through the Centre since its opening in July 2002 with a steady increase being experienced from year to year.
